Edit: Another reason why, is that it's just "easier" to aquire casting gear than it is melee as a Wizard. No matter how you specialize, a pure Sorcerer will always out-deal a pure Wizard, as he has a higher base spell level (thanks to the Savant tree), more spell points and a lower cost in general. Cores pickup Inflict wariness and unhallowed touch. Seem to recall it being very survivable but could take a while to kill stuff.
